Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses

Technology to watch in 2024

The landscape of wearable AI technology continues to grow and evolve. Integration of technology into our daily routines is reshaping how we engage with information and the world around us. In the land of wearable tech, smart glasses offer a practical solution for seamlessly integrating technology into our daily lives which is as unobtrusive as donning a pair of glasses. This makes them among the most practical and promising wearable AI solutions. No doubt Ray-Ban and Meta recognize the practical solution that smart glasses represent and so we are blessed with the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses.

1st Gen

It is worth noting the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses is the second generation of smart glasses produced by Ray-Ban. The first release two years ago was called Ray-Ban Stories, and due to some technology limitations struggled to find strong acceptance in the marketplace.

2nd Gen

The new iteration of Ray-Ban smart glasses are noticeably improved in many aspects, among them better battery life more compact charging case, lighter more comfortable fit, higher specs and performance, and a distinctly higher quality feel.

Controls

To initiate voice commands say “Hey Meta” and with that commands include calls, messages, and content capture or inquires for information can be requested from Meta AI. Text messages can be read aloud, Spotify music can be played (tap to go to the next song).

Settings

Need to manage your settings? All of that can be adjusted on the Meta View app on your phone.

Camera

Two tiny circles are visible in front of each hinge. Each one has an ultra-wide 12-megapixel camera producing 3024 by 4032 pixel images. (up from the 2592x1984 of it’s predecessor) 60-second image-stabilized videos and live streaming are ready now to post or integrate with meta-platform solutions like Facebook and Instagram.

Microphone

Capturing your voice and the ambient sounds are five microphones, two on each arm and one on the nose bridge. These work better than the first-generation glasses and seem to have no trouble accurately registering commands and inquiries and give your voice a full rich presence that is unexpectedly impressive.

Speakers

Just above each ear are the open-ear-speakers embedded in the arms of the glasses. These are designed to deliver a directional sound with extended range, bass, and sufficient maximum volume to drown out noisy and windy environments. In practice, the 2nd gen sound performance is night and day better especially for bass reproduction.

Charging Case

Battery life is rated at four hours, fortunately, the soft tan leather case is also a charging case, designed to charge the glasses up to eight more times while you are on the go. Home-based recharging connectivity is as you would expect USB-C. In practice, most users reported more than five hours of typical use. Tucking the glasses back in the charging case fully replenished the glasses in just one hour.

Styles

Currently, Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses are available in two tried and true Ray-Ban styles: the Venerable Wayfarer and the slightly rounder Headliner.

Other Factoids

Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses require mobile phone and wireless internet access. A Facebook account, Meta account, and the Meta View app are required to share content on social media. Just to let you know, a Facebook account is required. Facebook Assistant currently operates in English, French, and Italian. However, selected voice commands are only available in English.

The expansion of wearable AI can be attributed to a collective pursuit of increased convenience, efficiency, and connectivity. Within this landscape, smart glasses present themselves as a compelling option, providing a hands-free, immersive experience that bridges the digital and physical realms seamlessly.
