2024 Tenere 700
Is it still the price vs performance king of the midsized adventure bike segment?
The legendary Yamaha Ténéré 700 adventure bike gets updated for 2024. How does it all add up? Let’s delve into the specifications and characteristics that have historically made the Ténéré 700 a top contender in the mid-sized adventure bike category.
The T7 Legacy
The Ténéré 700 first introduced in 2020 was a game changer for adventurer riders looking to keep their bike budget under $10K. From the start this middleweight ADV quickly gained a cult following thanks to its smooth CP2 parallel-twin engine, no-frills feature set, groundbreaking versatility, and dirt bike“ish” off-road manners all at a price point no one at the time thought possible. The 2024 model, building upon this foundation, seeks to stay the course, offering incremental updates to maintain its character while building on a strong following among adventure motorcycle enthusiasts.
New for 2024
For 2024, the lightweight tube-steel frame, fully adjustable 43mm inverted fork, and rally-inspired profile remain untouched, preserving the bike's identity. The ABS system now has three modes, which as you might guess include both wheels on both off, or just the front on. A new 5-inch color TFT display is controlled by a new scrolling dial on the right handlebar and offers two display modes. one modern and one more traditionally analog. New smartphone connectivity is available via the free Y-Connect mobile app. New LED turn signals elevate the aesthetics. Also for 2024, MSRP sees a modest $300 increase, now standing at $10,799.
Character
The Ténéré 700 built its reputation as a cost-effective adventure bike that works surprisingly well offroad. In that regard, the smooth reliable 689cc CP2 parallel-twin engine still puts out 74 hp and 50 lb-ft of torque which is more than enough for most challenges on or off the tarmac. The revised three-mode ABS provides the three basic options that every ADV bike should have. In the dirt, more advanced off-road tacticians will find the “no abs” mode best as the front ABS does intervene often, nevertheless, less skilled off-road riders will find it helpful to keep the front wheel ABS turned on. Suspension is the same for 2024 so handling is still predictable and surprisingly light while moving at a modest or faster clip. In all the character of the bike is largely unchanged and that is a good thing.
Power Profile
The heart of the Ténéré 700, the 689cc CP2 engine, remains a standout feature. Its smooth power delivery, counterbalanced design, and six-speed transmission make it well-suited for anything from highway cruising to off-road escapades. The optional quickshifter works well, allowing quick clutchless shifts. Although 74 hp may seem modest compared with other middleweights like the V-Strom 800 @ 83 hp, when balanced against the Tenere’s 452 lbs, the T7’s power-to-weight ratio (0.164) makes this motor feel strong. The V-Strom by comparison at 507 lbs has the same 0.164 hp/lb. On the highway, it can cruise at speed and has the power to pass when needed. As with many midsized and lightweight ADV bikes, passing power is where it would be nice to have a few extra ponies on tap.
On and Off-Road
On the highway, the Ténéré 700 fairs well with relatively light handling, sufficient power, and comfortable ergonomics. While not adjustable, the windscreen and handguards add some comfort at speed. Taller riders will find that a windscreen visor provides a nice improvement in highway riding comfort. Most are inexpensive and can be tossed in a tank bag when riding in the dirt. Off-road, the bike manages to create a little bit of that dirt bike feel, which makes it fun to ride. Part of this is the lack of traction control, which means breaking the rear tire loose is as easy as twisting the throttle. Similarly, the bike is most effective off-road with the ABS turned all the way off. This is the third of the three available settings. the first two being ABS on both wheels or just the front wheel. The KYB fork and shock are adjustable and while they are slightly under-sprung for experienced off-road experts most riders should find them up to the task.
Dollar Value
Priced at $10,799, the Tenere 700 continues to offer excellent dollar value in the mid-sized adventure bike segment. The modest MSRP increase reflects the added features and improvements for 2024, making it a competitive choice for riders looking for a capable and customizable adventure companion. While the KTM, Suzuki, and most other offerings are north of this price point the more street-oriented Transalp manages to come in under this price. A good assortment of optional OEM accessories are available, such as the quickshifter, hard bags, and seat choices. The list of aftermarket accessories ensures that T7 owners will have no shortage of additional customization options.
Impressions
Weighing in at 452 pounds, the Tenere 700 strikes a balance between agility and stability. On the road, it feels well-planted and in the dirt, it feels lighter than it is. For most riders, myself included, this bike is just fun to ride. It feels agile and playful despite being almost twice as heavy as my dirt bike. If you grew up riding dirt bikes, you will find that although this bike is over 400 lbs, it “just feels right” in the dirt. Much lighter feeling than the GS or V-Strom, the 890/901 does feel less top-heavy in slow off-road settings. But in most settings, this bike feels considerably lighter than most other middleweight ADVs.
Competition
While the Ténéré 700 has earned its reputation as the not too big not too small choice in the adventure bike realm, new competitors threaten to find that new perfect balance. Whether it’s Honda's Transalp, Suzuki V-Strom 800, or Tuareg 660…each trying to find the mix of tech, features, and price. The Ténéré 700, however, maintains its appeal with its balanced attributes, competent engaging riding experience, and proven reliability.
Where does it stack up?
Midsized adventure bikes have never been more popular. it’s no wonder so many new bikes have hit or are slated to hit the market. Some like the Transalp and 790 have found a way to creep into the T7’s magical $10K “ish” price point and most others offer more advanced features. The Ténéré 700 is evolving slowly and strategically to stay relevant and keep the design moving forward but avoiding unnecessary complexity that could compromise its reliability.
While many adventure bikes are marketed as “off-road ready”, this is still one of only a few “adventure motorcycles” you will see on the starting line of your local off-road race this weekend. That is perhaps one of the best illustrations of how off-road-worthy this adventure bike is. It is also why, it’s clear Yamaha has struck a magical balance in its design. From the casual adventure tourer and the die-hard off-road rider the Tenere has a loyal following across all types of adventurers.
The future may hold more comprehensive updates down the road, but for now, the Ténéré 700 remains true to form, and a strong midsized ADV option worthy of consideration by any rider intent on exploring off the beaten path.
