CRF300L Rally …Long Range

Give your CRF300 Rally a 300 Mile Long Distance Fuel Range

The Honda CRF300L Rally Long Distance Adventure Bike takes shape with a growing list of mods and upgrades. The X-Frame and Rotopax RX-1G one gallon Gas Pack will give this machine the legs to go 300 miles between fuel stops, which puts it in good company with the likes of the illustrious 1250GSA.

It is easy to give your CRF300 Rally a 300 Mile Long Distance Fuel Range with a quick Rotopax Gas Pack upgrade. Most CRF300's deliver about 70 miles per gallon. The Rally comes stock with a decent sized 3.4 gallon fuel tank which gets you a respectable 240 miles down the road. Adding a 1 gallon Rotopax gas can gets that long distance fuel range to just over 300 miles. And at that range you can confidently hang with any of your buddies on just about any other adventure bike. You won't be matching them gas stop for gas stop because the Rotopax is obviously a separate reserve tank. Nevertheless you can venture off knowing that you can wait a very long time before searching for a gas station. This install requires side racks which I review in a separate installation article here on my website and also review in a video on my YouTube channel. Both of these upgrades are just some of the How-To reviews that I have posted to help you build the ultimate light weight long distance adventure bike based on the ever affordable CRF300 Rally.

The stock Tool Box is a neat little item if you are just bopping around town. As a true adventure bike, we will need more tools than this little guy can handle. And this location will be needed to make space for the additional fuel tank we need to give our 2021 Honda CRF300 Rally Long Range Adventure it’s impressive 300 mile long distance capability.

Removing OEM tool box from motorcycle

If you have not already done so at the time of side rack installation, you will need to remove the OEM tool box which is held in place with four Phillips head screws, three are on top.

The forth screw is located on the bottom.

Motorcycle side racks

Side Racks can be order with or without an X-Frame. This is an Outback Motortek side rack set. The optional X-Frame is secured to the rack with aluminum brackets. Making it easy to adjust front to back and also therefore easily removable should the need arise.

Optional mounting place

The optional mounting place can be used with the Pack Mount as needed.

Mounting plate

If we use the mounting plate we will get a few millimeters of stand off which may help in some applications.

Assembly of the mounting plate to the Pack Mount will help us find out what our best set up might be.

Dry fitting

As always, “Dry Fitting” helps us find the best placement on the bike, before we add threadlock to all fasteners and tighten everything down.

Although the Pack Mount ships with the mounting plate included for a variety of applications, in this instance the mounting plate holes do not line up with any of the X-Frame holes. So, this mounting place will find a home on the shelf in the shop.

Securing rack mount to X-frame

Securing the Rack Mount to the X-Frame directly using the two 13mm bolts is the strongest set up for this application.

The X-Frame looks best centered when not in use, but the Gas Pack will not fit upright in this location without some movement of the mount down and back. (Note: The Gas Pack may be mounted horizontally instead of in the upright orientation pictured above. In that case the X-Frame will be more centered. In either case all other steps of the installation will be the same.)

it is necessary to move the X-Frame back an inch and a half from center to provide the Gas Pack more room to move in and out of it’s mount without interfering with the helmet lock and rear fender housing.

All fasteners get medium threadlock to ensure trouble free riding for thousands of miles to come.

Don’t forget to put a thin film of grease on the threads of the spin lock. Then go ahead and spin it a couple times after it makes contact with the Fuel Pack to lock it down firmly.

As you can see. with the X-Frame moved back and the Pack Mount moved down, the Fuel Cell has a generous amount of room to come in and out of it’s home behind the left side rack.
