SAE Battery Connector Install
If you own a Husqvarna 701 or KTM 690 you know how annoying it is that these bikes require tools to access the battery. With a small SAE battery connector kit (link included below) and a few minutes of your time you can install this universal SAE battery connector. Easily accessed even with gloves on, it will save you time in the shop and on the road.
Hidden under the seat and easily accessible when needed. Charging, jump starting and powering outboard accessories will be quick and easy by removing the seat of your Husky701 or KTM690 and pulling out the SAE battery connector.
Wherever you travel the SAE battery connector is perhaps the most common battery connector that you will find in motorcycle accessories, whether in town, across the country or around the world. Yep you have no excuse to put off that around the world trip you were planning.
This SAE battery connector install requires just an 8mm wrench and 8mm socket and a few small cable ties. While this SAE Connector Installation “How-To” is specific to the Husqvarna 701 and KTM 690 enduro, the method is obviously largely the same for whatever bike you own.
After removing the seat, pull the ECM off it’s posts and move it out of the way.
Remove the 8mm bolts that hold the battery top plate, being careful not to drop these small bolts. They are hard to retrieve if you drop them…yep been there, done that.
Now remove the top plate.
Disconnect the battery leads beginning with the negative lead, followed by the positive lead.
When planning the location of your SAE connector take notice of the seat pan pressure points, noticeable by the small worn circles on the subframe.
Seat pan pressure point.
Adding a cable tie close to the seat pan pressure points is a good precaution to avoid pinching and damaging a wire.
Bigger cable ties can be used around the fuse bank, where space is less limited.
The negative cable will need to be tucked down in empty space beside the fuse bank to create the softest bend in the wire, while keeping it out of harms way.
Securing the battery leads will go in reverse order, so positive (Red) lead first then negative lead second.
Install the battery top plate.
Tighten down the top plate with the 8mm bolts.
Push the ECM down onto the posts.
Be especially careful to ensure the connector cable is securely tucked in away from the pressure points so it does not get pinched by the seat. After some time the cable will begin to retain it’s shape so that less care will need to be taken in the future with this. But on day one, let’s get it exactly where we want it to be long term.
Remember not to add cable ties too far forward on the left side of the bike. This will give you more convenience and flexibility when you need to plug in your chargers and accessories.
Hopefully this “how-to” review was helpful.
Good luck with your own ultimate adventure bike build.
